Las Vegas Police have released body camera footage after a former Police officer pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor case on Thursday. The profanity-laden video shows then-Metropolitan Police Department officer Edward Alford, 50, assaulting a woman near Tropicana Avenue and Interstate 15 early morning of Jan. 6, 2015. Alford was ousted from his position from Metropolitan Police Department in September the same year.
On Friday evening, the Metro released the previously unseen footage of Alford’s encounter with a woman whom he suspected was working as a prostitute. The 3-minute, 23-second video was released after Alford’s criminal case had been closed, the Metro said in a statement. Alford can face up to a year behind bars and a $100,000 fine.
The video shows Alford getting out of his patrol car and calling the woman. After getting her attention, Alford attempted to handcuff her after showing her his taser. Alford is scheduled to be sentenced in January. The prosecutors said he could no longer work as a Police officer after the end of his sentence.
Initially, Alford was charged with violating the civil rights of the woman after he used excessive force during arrest her in January 2015 and falsified reports of his encounter. The woman was also charged with loitering and littering, but those charges were later dismissed.
If you have been arrested or facing criminal charges, an effective defense can be the deciding factor between a prison sentence and a reduced or dismissed charge. If you’ve been arrested or facing a criminal law defense case (such as immigration, criminal offense, deportation, DWI or DUI, theft, assault, drug-related assaults, etc.), it’s also crucial that you know your rights.
