October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. More than 13,000 incidents were reported to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office last year according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a rise of nearly 1,000 from the 2013 figure, and Houston Community Newspapers is looking to shine a light on the problem.
One official says that one of the signs to look for is isolation from social activity because an abuser strives to make their victim feel alone.
Abusers tend to want to isolate their victims, so if you notice that friends or family are becoming withdrawn or isolated from events, any type of social affiliation they have–that’s one of the first signs I see in survivors that I provide services to,” she said.
According to officials, domestic violence has an underlying motive, which is power and control over the survivor, so I think that sometimes the public believes it’s a private problem between two people, and unfortunately those survivors will usually think that they cannot reach out for help.
One of the most unsettling realities about domestic violence is that the signs are not typically outwardly visible, and sometimes not noticeable even to the person the acts have been perpetrated against.
Sometimes a victim may not immediately accept help, even if they know the abuse is occurring. Benitez says it is important for those close to them to remain steadfastly at their side even in those situations.
Every person has spoken to stressed to the public to do their own research on domestic violence, educate their friends and families and alert those close to them who may be experiencing it and have become fearful of repercussions that they will never face the fight on their own.
A minor domestic incident could quickly lead to a more serious domestic abuse charge. For instance, if a harassment charge is alleged by a victim, and it’s found the victim and offender were involved in an intimate relationship, the law enforcement is required to make an immediate arrest to ensure the continued safety of the alleged victim, as well as the safety of other occupants in their home.
Domestic violence offenses usually involve spouses, partners or people who are dating or living together. The prosecutors and lawmakers will continue to pursue the case even in situations where the alleged victim wishes to drop all charges. Therefore, it is crucial to have an experienced defense on your side.
