A former math teacher in Cypress-Fairbanks was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday after he admitted having sexual assault of a child with a 16-year-old student in his class.
The Incident
The defendant, aged 31, pleaded guilty when his trial started on Tuesday. He was charged with a felony on two accounts of sexual assault of a child who is under 17. The defendant admitted that the student and he had sex at least two times in his car. Earlier in the week, the victim testified that the teacher pressured her into having sex with him after traveling with her to Bear Creek Park during her junior year in 2015.
Testification by Defendant
The defendant pleaded guilty and testified in his own defense. He told the jurors that the teen was “in control” of their relationship and she seduced him. His defense attorneys were James Kan and Don Nguyen. They demanded a more lenient verdict, pointed out the teen remained close to the teacher even after the encounters ended. She also enrolled in another semester to have classes in him and sat next to him during lunchtime tutorials. The victim also continued messaging him even after the encounters have ended.
Meanwhile, prosecutor Ashley Guice noted that the defendant picked the girl up from her home, drove to Bear Creek Park in northwest Houston and had sex at least twice there. She also pointed that the defendant had a habit of being close to the female students. Also, he sent them messages on social media. He used these techniques to manipulate their emotions to commit sexual assault of a child.
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD officials began investigating the Cypress Ridge High School math teacher in November 2016 after receiving an anonymous tip. The former teacher was later arrested after he admitted to the sex and said it was consensual.
