On Nov. 23, 1979, a man and a woman were forced into a car by two men at a liquor store in Dallas. The couple was robbed, and both men took the woman to a park and sexually assaulted her. They fled in the car after taking her driver’s license and a rabbit fur coat.
The victims’ car was found abandoned at a grocery store lot where the men had attempted to sell the coat before fleeing. A popular man and a companion were stopped by police two miles from the crime scene and were arrested when a pistol was discovered.
The next day, the woman identified both of them as her attackers during a photographic lineup while her male companion was unable to identify either man.
In court, the couple identified the two men. One of them was sentenced to 75 years in prison. In 2007, he wrote to the Innocence Project of New York to investigate his case. The project discovered that pubic hair had been preserved, and in July 2008 a DNA test was requested.
The results showed that neither both men were involved in the crime. “Whatever your truth is, you have to stick with it,” said the man minutes after his conviction was overturned.
