While responding to a call about a bickering couple, Berkeley police reported that on Monday they had found almost 700 pounds of psilocybin aka “magic” mushrooms with a street value of $1 million in the house. The police also discovered a massive cultivation and sales operation of the illegal drugs.
Police arrived at the home at the 1700 block of Alcatraz Avenue at 10 pm Saturday, after receiving a call about domestic violence. In a statement on Monday, the police said a 37-year-old woman and her 35-year-old boyfriend refused to open the door. But, after a while, the couple complied and exited the house and was arrested. Officers later entered the home to see if anyone else was inside.
The officers have issued a search warrant and seized a total of 677 pounds of the mind-altering magic mushrooms, and over $3,000 in cash. The statement also said that the evidence indicated a large-scale psychedelic mushroom or “magic” mushroom processing operation.
The couple was sent to the Alameda County Jail on narcotics-related charges. Their names have not yet been released.
