Police officers have narrowed down one at least possible suspect involved a rash of bike thefts over the last several months in the Midtown area.
Around 30 of those bike thefts occurred at the Metro Midtown apartment complex in the 2300 block of Bagby Street. Another 35 were reported over the previous four months in the area.
Some of the bikes have even been located at pawn shops. The suspect also used a similar method of operation in the first 35 bike thefts, but police aren’t ready to rule out other suspects.
Multiple residents have posted about the thefts in a Facebook group, “Stolen Bike Search Houston.” In surveillance images, one person posted on Sept. 10, 2018, a man with a goatee and a backpack can be seen stealing a bike from inside a garage.
Meanwhile, in the greater Houston area, authorities have arrested a second suspect on suspicions of stealing more than $33,000 worth of goods from at least 20 Home Depot stores.
The second suspect was arrested “without incident” Thursday morning at his home in north Houston. He was taken into custody on charges of “engaging in organized criminal activity” and faces up to 20 years in prison.
The first suspect was arrested on June 22, 2018. Rather than simply pilfering goods, the suspect instead would swap bar code stickers off the expensive items at Home Depot and replace them with bar code stickers from items costing considerably less, according to authorities.

A Katy man accused of theft for clogging a toll road collection basket so he could later come by and steal cash left by other motorists.
The investigation that led to the arrest of 50-year-old man from Katy began after officials over the past several months found wads of tape and paper stuffed into the toll collection coin machine at the tollway plaza at 6100 W. Sam Houston Parkway N. The authority’s security director installed surveillance cameras in an attempt to identify any possible suspects.
On Aug. 4, a man was spotted on a security camera driving up to the coin machine. Kimble is seen sticking paper into the machine to prevent the coins from entering the vault. Kimble returned to the same tollway at least 11 more times. “Each time he passed through you can see him taking a handful of coins out of the collection machine and drive off,” according to the charging documents against him.
Toll Road security officials told investigators video was available of the man doing the same thing days later. The license plate and a house in Katy were both registered to the Katy man.
Deputy constables watched the security video and said it supports the case against the man.
They watched the video and clearly observed the man as he drives up to the coin machine and stuff some paper inside the tray and drive off. Seven minutes later, he returns and grabs a handful of coins out of the collection tray and places it on his lap and drives off.
Also caught on camera and accused of stealing coins from the toll road collection basket was a 26-year old man from Houston. Unlike the Katy man who preferred to use wads of paper, investigators said the Houston man preferred blue painters tape to prevent coins from tollway booths to enter the slot.
On Aug. 10, 2017, the Houston man was pulled over by deputy constables for failing to restrain a child younger than eight. He also was charged with driving with an invalid license. He later admitted staging between five and 10 burglaries on the coin-collection machines, authorities said.
The man was charged with misdemeanor burglary of a coin-operated machine. He was later released after posting a bond in the case and has a court date to answer the charges.

A former law office chairman is being investigated on theft and money laundering allegations, accused of misappropriating funds of at least two of his law firm’s clients.
Authorities seized 127 boxes of files, six computers, and disk drives from the Houston high-rise office, according to the returned search warrant filed in a district court.
In his affidavit for the search warrant, which also targeted computer logins, passwords, memory devices, and telephones owned by the law firm, a fraud examiner indicated authorities were seeking evidence used to commit felony offenses of misapplication of fiduciary property, theft and money laundering.
The search warrant indicates the district attorney’s investigation began in February 2017, after the law firm’s former client alleged that the firm misused funds from her divorce case. she filed for divorce from her husband and hired the law firm in December 2013.
She later had the divorce case moved to bankruptcy court in Texas’ Southern District in part, he claimed, because of excessive legal fees. The law firm filed a motion accusing the former client of filing his bankruptcy case to skirt payments to his estranged wife.
At one point, the former client’s trust account had less than $650 in it, according to a fact-finding ruling in 2016, in which U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge outlined a year’s worth of transactions and “discrepancies” between bank statements and ledgers for the trust.
Based on those records, the judge concluded that the law firm had “taken funds from the (trust) account that has not yet been earned and, thus, several thousands of dollars have been unaccounted for.
He put the number of unaccounted funds or over-payments to the law firm at more than $140,000.
The law firm disputed the findings and planned to appeal the judge’s finding.
No charges have been filed against anyone in connection with the ongoing investigation. Investigators seized financial records, legal files, documents and correspondence related to two divorce cases handled by the firm, according to the search warrant documents.
As a defense, the former law firm chairman said he had no advance notice of the search and had no details about the allegations beyond the content of the search warrant. He also believed there’s an accusation of misappropriation of client funds.

Cash and a small cooler containing medication were stolen Aug. 2 from a vehicle in the Kroger parking lot. The victim reportedly left the bank at 12:01 p.m. before driving to Kroger.
Two vehicle burglaries were reported Aug. 3, 2017. A firearm was stolen from one unlocked vehicle, and a wallet and GPS were stolen from the other, also unlocked.
A middle-aged, short woman walked out on a $115 bill on Aug. 2 last year. She reportedly received a mani-pedi, wax, and massage before claiming she left her purse in her vehicle and leaving. Her vehicle was described as a blue, two-door passenger car, possibly a Saturn.
A 79-year-old Friendswood man stole an iPad from Cash America, 3735 FM 528, police said. The store manager reportedly noticed the iPad missing and identified the suspect with surveillance video and a credit card receipt. An officer retrieved the iPad from the man’s home and, at the manager’s request, warned him to stay away from the store, according to the report.
