ATM machine thefts are on the rise in Houston. People who commit these crimes do not have an idea of the consequences they might get when they get caught or arrested. Among these cases are the two stories below:
A couple men are on the run after breaking into an ATM machine in the Energy Corridor early Tuesday. Harris County deputies were called to the Chase Bank on Eldridge Parkway at Westheimer around 3 a.m. The bank’s security company said two men were trying to get into the ATM machine in the drive-thru. The suspects were gone when the deputies arrived. It’s unclear whether the suspects got away with any cash.
In another theft incident, five people have been arrested after an attempted ATM theft in Northline.
Houston police arrived at the Chase Bank in the 5200 blocks of Airline around 4 a.m., where thieves had tried ripping an ATM out of the ground by attaching a chain to both a stolen city of Houston truck and the ATM.
Five people jumped out of the car when they saw police. Police initially arrested two but eventually arrested all five.

A Friendswood woman has been arrested on a theft charge following a months-long investigation into money reported stolen from the Friendswood High School Mustangs Booster Club. She has released Dec. 3 on a $20,000 bond.
Theft of the money was reported in August.

Burglary
A purse was stolen from a vehicle Dec. 2 in the 200 blocks of East Heritage Drive, police said. The victim parked her vehicle at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church Family Life Center and left her purse under the front passenger seat, according to the report. At 6:50 p.m., she learned her vehicle’s front passenger-side window was smashed, police said.
Theft
A ladder was stolen from the side of a trailer Nov. 28 at Hut Mobile Home Park, 110 Woodlawn Drive, police said. Another resident reported the theft of a miter saw and air compressor, according to the report.

Accused package thieves in Texas would be prosecuted the same as home burglars if two Texas lawmakers get their wish.
Two state representatives both authored bills in the house and senate that would make package theft at least a state jail felony in Texas.
According to the filing, theft of 10 or fewer pieces of mail would be a state jail felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. Theft of more than 10 and less than 50 would be a third-degree felony with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. And theft of 50 or more would be a second-degree felony with a 20-year maximum prison sentence.
Right now, the punishment level for any theft depends on the value of the stolen property. Theft of property worth fewer than $2,500 is treated as a misdemeanor, while anything greater is a felony, according to the Texas Penal Code.
A recent Houston Chronicle article showed that unfortunately, many Houston residents are familiar with such thefts. Local police say package thefts have increased in the city by 80 percent since 2015 when HPD started tracking the crime.
About 20 out of every 1,000 homes in Houston were targets of package theft, making the city No. 7 in the nation for such crimes, according to a certain home security research firm.
Police say the crimes increase over the holidays. If passed, the bills would go into effect September 2019.

Thefts
- Vehicles, lawn equipment and the identities of several victims number among items recently stolen in Pearland.
- Police arrested two Houston women, ages 21 and 24, for allegedly stealing televisions Dec. 31 at a department store in the 1900 block of Main Street.
- A stolen identity was used to purchase two vehicles from an auto dealership between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31 in the 5700 blocks of Broadway Street.
- An 18-year-old Pearland man was arrested on a shoplifting charge on Jan. 1 in the 2500 block of Pearland Parkway.
- A vehicle was stolen between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 in the 1100 block of Lochmoor Lane.
- A trailer was reported stolen Jan. 2 in the 12300 blocks of Broadway Street.
- Police arrested a Houston man, 61, for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after a traffic stop Jan. 3 in the 2500 block of Business Center Drive. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Houston.
- The shoplifting occurred Jan. 3 in the 1900 block of Main Street, police said.
- Theft of motor vehicle parts or accessories was reported Jan. 4 in the 1000 block of Bristol Way.
- Package theft was reported Jan. 4 in the 11200 blocks of Edwards Avenue.
- Police filed a shoplifting report Jan. 4 in the 2800 block of Business Center Drive.
- The theft was reported Jan. 4 in the 1900 block of Plum Falls Lane.
- A bicycle was stolen Dec. 29 in the 2600 block of South Brompton Drive, according to a Jan. 5 police report.
- Police filed a theft report Jan. 5 in the 2700 block of Manvel Road.
- The theft was reported Jan. 5 in the 2500 block of Business Center Drive, police said.
- A vehicle was taken without consent Jan. 5 or Jan. 6 in the 2800 block of Foxden Drive, police said.
Burglary
- Several people are on the run after attempting to break into an ATM in southwest Houston overnight, police said. Officers on Thursday were at the bank on 6255 Bissonnet, near Hillcroft, where the thieves left a U-Haul truck at the scene, according to Metro Video. The thieves used the U-Haul by attaching a chain to both it and the ATM. The machine was destroyed. It’s unknown whether any money was taken.
- A home burglary occurred Dec. 31 in the 12300 blocks of Shadow Creek Parkway, police said.
- Two trimmers were stolen between Dec. 26 and 28 from a garage in the 13400 blocks of Vintage Trail Lane, according to a Dec. 31 police report.
- Police filed a home burglary report Jan. 1 in the 3300 blocks of Monarch Meadow Lane.
- A vehicle was burglarized Dec. 31, according to a police report filed Jan. 2 in the 2200 block of Main Street.
- A motor vehicle burglary was reported Jan. 2 in the 3400 blocks of Business Center Drive, police said.
- Police filed a report for burglary of a building Jan. 3 in the 5300 blocks of Broadway Street.
- Burglary of a building was reported Jan. 3 in the 3100 blocks of Cullen Parkway, police said.
- Police filed four vehicle burglary reports Jan. 3 in the 1700 block of Main Street.
- Unknown suspects forced entry into a building Jan. 6 in the 6700 blocks of Broadway Street, police said.

- A vehicle burglary was reported Dec. 13 at The Goddard School, 1650 Friendswood Lakes Blvd., police said. The victim entered the daycare at 5:28 p.m. and returned to her vehicle two minutes later to find the passenger-side window smashed and her purse stolen.
- A handbag and keys were stolen during a vehicle burglary Dec. 15 at Stevenson Park, 1100 S. Friendswood Drive. The victim parked at noon and returned to her vehicle at 2 p.m. to find the rear passenger window smashed.
- Police investigated a vehicle burglary Dec. 16 at Atria Senior Living Facility, 1310 S. Friendswood Drive. The drivers-side rear window was smashed and purse taken from the trunk between 9:15 a.m. and 2 p.m., police said.
Theft
- The snatch-and-grab theft of a new iPhone XR from T-Mobile, 210 E. Parkwood Ave., was reported Dec. 13.
- A power washer, 2-gallon gas can and a ladder were stolen from a backyard patio Dec. 14 in the 1400 block of Osborne Drive.
- A trailer was stolen Dec. 15 or Dec. 16 from a large vacant lot at 1101 S. Friendswood Drive. The trailer, described as a black, 20-foot 2014 Lamar flatbed with Texas license plate 543597J, has a black, metal toolbox attached to the front and a spare tire mounted to the tongue. A 5-foot Bobcat bucket and about 40 pieces of rebar were loaded on the trailer, police said.
Assault
- Police charged a Friendswood woman, 27, with assault, family violence Dec. 10. She allegedly assaulted her husband at Baywood Apartments, 5025 FM 2351.
- Police charged a 20-year-old Friendswood man with disorderly conduct after a fight in progress reported Dec. 14 at Sonic Drive-In, 806 S. Friendswood Drive. Before officers arrived, the dispatcher reported a blue Ford pickup involved in the disturbance was leaving the scene, police said. An officer stopped the suspect vehicle at the intersection of West Castlewood and Cedarwood avenues and determined the driver had been punched by his brother, the suspect, according to the report. The suspect allegedly placed his brother in a choke hold and pulled him over the center console and out of the truck. The suspect was taken into custody, and the brother received a citation for disorderly conduct, police said.
Driving while intoxicated
- Police charged a Houston woman, 51, with DWI after a suspicious vehicle was reported Dec. 14 in the 2300 block of Butler Drive. An officer arrived to find the vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection, police said. The driver, who said she was lost, failed a field sobriety test and consented to a blood draw, according to the report.
- A Rosharon man, 25, was charged with DWI after an injury accident Dec. 16 in the 1000 block of Cowards Creek Court, police said. Another motorist witnessed the accident and told police the driver exited his vehicle, stumbled across the yard and laid down by a tree, according to the report. The driver refused a breath or blood test, and bond was set at $1,500, police said.
- Police charged an Alvin woman, 28, with DWI after a traffic stop for speeding and straddling the dashed lane line Dec. 17 in the 400 blocks of West Parkwood Avenue. She reportedly failed a field sobriety test and refused a breath or blood test.
